Due to their low weight connected with their high energy content, lithium batteries are widely spread in every household, company, and even every pocket worldwide. Lithium batteries are a suitable energy supplier for the industry and for our private everyday life as well as for communication and mobility in the present and in the future.
However, due to their high energy density, lithium batteries are not only efficient energy storage but pose a certain risk potential. Lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods and therefore they are subject to strict import, transport, and dangerous goods regulations with regards to their manufacturing process, the approval process, the packaging, and the transport itself, depending on the lithium content and nominal energy. Nevertheless, sometimes incidents occur when it comes to the international transport of lithium batteries in which the batteries release dangerous gases (degassing), leak corrosive liquids, generate significant heat, or cause a fire.

Besides the specific requirements, however, there are also generally applicable regulations, such as the charge level of the battery, the appointment of a dangerous goods officer for the various modes of transport, manufacturing processes under a quality assurance program or compliance, and proof of the "UN Manual of Tests and Criteria " Chapter 38.3.
